Not so Corporate Headshots

Not So Corporate: Fun, Modern, and Creative Headshots

What do you picture when you hear the word “headshots”?

I’m no mind reader, but I’m guessing the traditional “head-and-shoulders, boring business attire, Colgate-smile” corporate headshot is springing to mind.

If so, it’s time to update your mental image. And probably the literal image too.

If you’re due for new headshots and you’re already feeling your feet getting cold or wondering if it would really be so unprofessional to use a selfie, rest assured. You are not doomed to stuffy corporate headshots with stereotyped poses and forced smiles. At Royce Studio, it’s all about the not so corporate. Believe it or not, headshots can be modern, personalized, creative…even fun!

What is a Creative Headshot?

A creative headshot does all the same stuff a corporate headshot does—but better!

Traditional headshots are the head-and-shoulders, sitting on a chair in the studio variety. They allow people to put a face to your name and feel more familiar and comfortable with you.

Not so corporate headshots do that too, but they focus more on capturing who you really are and what your business is about. With creative headshots, you can choose a space that suits your business vibe, include props that showcase what you do, and use a variety of different poses and outfits. You can also get the super cool action headshots that show you at work doing your thang.

Why a Not-so-Corporate Headshot Might Be for You

A not so corporate headshot might for you if:

  • You need a bit more than a single headshot. If you’re after a few pics, you don’t want them all to look like they came off the same printout of one of those shopping mall photo booths.

  • You want to use your pictures for social media. Traditional headshots have their place, but it’s not on Instagram. Modern, action-type headshots are going to serve you way better!

  • You’re looking for a more interesting vibe. I want to make it clear that I have nothing against real estate agents. But we don’t all want to look like one, am I right?

Who are Not So Corporate Headshots Best For?

Not so corporate headshots are perfect for creatives, but they’re certainly not limited to the artsy crowd. Here are some of the folks who can benefit from a more modern approach to old-school headshots.

  • Creatives like artists, writers, photographers, designers, etc. Art is all about what you bring to it, so it just makes sense to incorporate your personality, your creative energy, even your workspace for fun and edgy headshots.

  • Small business owners. For a lot of small business owners, you are the face of the brand! It’s extra important to make sure your brand images reflect who you are. Personal and professional go hand in hand when you’re a solopreneur.

  • Teams. Every member of your team brings something unique and valuable to the table. Modern headshots can go beyond putting names to faces and really showcase the personalities and strengths of each member. This is especially important when clients will be interacting with specific members of the team and want to get to know them. (Think salons, schools, medical offices, or anywhere else clients tend to work one-on-one with certain team members.)

  • Employees who want a more interesting vibe for their boss-mandated professional photo. Who knows, maybe everybody in your office will ditch corporate headshots for the cooler version!

What You Can Do to Achieve Fun and Creative Headshots

There are a few things you can do to make sure your creative headshots turn out great and are as fun as you want them to be.

Relax and just be yourself. This is the point, after all! We want to capture the real you. Don’t worry, we’ll make sure it’s the best and most professional version. No need to post the blooper reel. Unless, like me, your whole life is an outtake! (Embrace it, and welcome to my tribe.)

Bring music. Have trouble relaxing in front of the camera? I get it. There’s a reason I’m always behind the lens. But listening to tunes can help you feel confident and move naturally. No one else needs to know you were jamming out to “Happy” when you flashed that winning smile.

Bring outfit changes. Different outfits can portray a different vibe and give you some fun options. Plus, if you’ll be using your pictures across the website or on social media, you don’t want them all to look like they were taken on the same afternoon.

Choose a space you like and feel comfortable in. This might be your workspace, or it could be a favorite local hangout or outdoor space you love. If you need ideas, just ask. I got you.

And last but not least, one of the most important things you can do to get those epic headshots you’re after is to choose the right headshot photographer.

The Right Headshot Photographer

If you’re going to get headshots that don’t look stiff and stuffy, you need to choose someone you feel comfortable with to help you get cool and creative headshots instead. Someone who’s experienced and knows what they’re doing, not just with a camera, but with people. And someone who knows exactly how awkward it can feel to pose for professional pictures, and will help you relax and manage some actual, genuine smiles.

Oh my. Is that my cue?

All righty. Moment of truth: If you really want some epic, creative headshots but are a little nervous about it too, I’m your gal. Uncomfortable subjects are my favorites…because awkward is my specialty. I’m happy to tell jokes (mom of three boys here, so you know these are going to be classy), model that incredibly weird-feeling pose for you, pull silly faces. Whatever it takes to help you laugh, relax, and enjoy your shoot.

And somehow in your photos you will come out looking awesome and professional, despite the fact that we spent almost the entire time acting like middle-schoolers.

Don’t ask me how it works. I just know that it does.

Not sure you believe me? Try it out for yourself. If you’re ready for some fun, modern, and not so corporate headshots, get in touch and let’s do it! I can’t wait to show you what a confident and creative pro you really are!
